Healthy Start is a department of the Bear Valley Unified School District and consists of two components:
Healthy Start Community Collaborative partners with local health, mental health and social services agencies and community organizations to ensure that youth and families can access health, mental health and basic needs resources in the community. Healthy Start is a partner in the Kiwanis Gifts for Kids/Holiday Giving Collaborate which coordinates the distribution of toys, food baskets and clothing during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
Healthy Start Student Support Program provides school based non-academic supports for students pre-kindergarten through high school. Healthy Start Health Aides assists the district nurse by providing daily health services, medication management and health screenings. Healthy Start Family Advisors coordinate with each school’s Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports through classroom character education lessons and with individual and small groups for students dealing with loss, emotion control and peer relationships. Healthy Start also identifies and provides services to our homeless student and foster student populations.
Healthy Start Family Advisors are at the following schools:
- Baldwin Lane Elementary School
- Big Bear Elementary School
- North Shore Elementary School
- Big Bear Middle School
- Big Bear High School
By working with children starting at pre-school age through high school and attempting to address their mental, physical and emotional health, we hope to help nurture healthy, happy families.
The Healthy Start main office is located at Big Bear High School, 351 N. Maple Lane, Sugarloaf 92386
